Persistence

"Discontent is the first necessity of progress.  Show me a thoroughly satisfied man and I'll show you a failure."

Persistence - Your Internal Cheerleader

“Nothing in the world will take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than the unsuccessful person with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
– Calvin Coolidge

When it comes to persistence - that pretty much says it all. But we’ll add some more anyway.

If everyone quit at the first obstacle or failure, we would virtually be non-existent today. Do you know how incredibly low the odds are of succeeding your very first time at anything? Think about this for a moment.

When a baby learns to walk and talk – they don’t get anything right at first. Can you imagine condemning them to a life of crawling because they don’t rise and walk on their first effort? Or, relegating them to a life of silence because they don’t utter their first sentence perfectly? Crazy, isn’t it?

But the baby has cheerleaders constantly encouraging them, loving them, and teaching them. And they persist – and nearly EVERY one of them learns to walk and talk. Imagine that!

Perhaps we are at a point that we don’t have those daily cheerleaders so readily any more. It’s easier to quit when there’s no one watching or encouraging us constantly to keep going. It’s at these very moments that your cheerleading is simply your persistence.

How many times have we listened to the metaphors that nearly every “Home Run King” also led the league in strike outs? It’s true. But, they’re not remembered for their strikeouts. They’re remembered for their accomplishments and their persistence.

Michael Jordan, indisputably the greatest basketball player of all time, admitted, “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. . . . I can accept failure, but I can’t accept not trying.”

Your success could lie in your very next try. So, why stop? Many fortunes have been lost or never found by stopping just short. Many, on the other hand, have been found by trying just one more time.
